A student expelled for ragging at PUST

The university authorities have temporarily expelled a student of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) for ragging by senior students in the mess. At the same time, the Anti Ragging Committee has been directed to look into the incident.

This information was conveyed in a press release signed by Farooq Hossain, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Publication Department of the University on Monday (September 18) in the evening. Earlier this decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the university.

Rokaiya, the expelled student is a student of the 2021-22 academic year of the university's statistics department. And the victim is a student of the 2022-23 academic year of the history department.

The press release said that, an emergency meeting was held on Monday in the office of the vice-chancellor of the university Professor Dr. Hafiza Khatun. The VC presided over the Emergency Meeting. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. S. M. Mustafa Kamal Khan, treasurer professor. K. M. Salah Uddin, Student advisors, assistant student advisors, acting proctors, assistant proctors and presidents of all Chairmen were present. In the meeting, a student of statistics department was suspended based on the written complaint of a student of history department. At the same time, the anti-ragging committee of the university has been directed to submit a report within the next 5 working days to look into the entire incident.  

University student advisor Dr. Nazmul Hossain said that an emergency meeting was held immediately after the written complaint of the aggrieved student. Initially, one person was suspended. Our university has anti-ragging committee. They have been asked to investigate the incident and submit a report within 5 days. Action will be taken against others based on that report.

According to several sources of the university, many female students live on rental basis in the 5-storey Rabbej Tower adjacent to the university. On Saturday (September 16) around 8 pm, several first year students were called to their rooms by the senior students. At that time Shimu Rani Talukdar refused to go claiming herself sick. Enraged by this, she was taken to the dormitory roof and ragged in various ways till 11 pm. When she became seriously ill, she was admitted to Pabna General Hospital.

Several students who did not want to reveal their names said that the owner of the mess, Abul Kalam Azad, tried to cover up the incident by managing the university administration. But when the news was published in the media, the administration sat in awe.
